The Minister of Aviation and Space Development, Festus Keyamo, has provided an updated figure on what the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) spends annually on civil servants traveling back and forth between Abuja and Lagos.
Keyamo disclosed on Thursday through his X platform account that FAAN spends close to N1 billion annually on moving civil servants between Abuja and Lagos to discharge their duties.
According to him, when he gave an amount of over N400 million naira during his Channels TV interview on Wednesday, he was not informed of the amount FAAN spent last year on DTA (Duty Tour Allowance) alone for the principal officers traveling back. and almost daily from Lagos to Abuja.
Giving the updated figure on Thursday, the minister disclosed that FAAN spends up to N493,678,620.37 on Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) and N451,058,950.09 on air tickets (worth almost N1 billion) for its civil servants due to its head office which had been moved to Abuja.
Keyamo, therefore, stressed that despite the grievances expressed by some stakeholders, there is no going back on the plan to relocate the FAAN headquarters from Abuja to Lagos to save costs and ensure operational efficiency.
He argued that there are not enough offices in Abuja to accommodate all the principal officers of FAAN.
In his words: “When I did my Channels TV interview yesterday, I was not informed about the amount FAAN spent last year alone on DTA (Duty Tour Allowance) for the principal officers traveling almost back and forth from Lagos to Abuja. on a daily basis. The amount was N493,678,620.37. This apart from the air tickets I mentioned which amounted to N451, 058,950.09.
“So in total, due to the emphasis on appointing Abuja as the headquarters of FAAN (when there are no offices in Abuja to accommodate all the principal officers), FAAN has spent close to N1 billion in one year!”
