Appoint former faction leader Ehie as chief of staff – IYC urges Fubara

The Ijaw Youth Council, Global, has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to immediately appoint Edison Ehie, the former faction leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as his Chief of Staff.

This request comes amid widespread speculation suggesting that Fubara Ehie has already opted for the role of Chief of Staff.

However, PUNCH correspondent understands that the current Chief of Army Staff, Chidi Amadi, an ally of former Governor Nyesom Wike, has not yet tendered his resignation.

Although Ehie did not mention any specific reason for his resignation, Governor Fubara, who addressed the matter on Monday, maintained that Ehie's departure was a deliberate attempt to promote peace and address political unrest in the state.

Speculation grew on Tuesday that Fubara had appointed Ehie as his chief of staff. Efforts to verify this information, however, proved futile as the media aide to the governor, Boniface Onyedi, denied any knowledge of any such development.

But the Secretary of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Maobuye Nangi-Obu, while addressing journalists on Wednesday, urged Fubara to appoint Ehie as his Chief of Staff, saying he understood governance and the rule of law.

Nangi-Obu stated: “It is the right of the governor to appoint whoever he wants, as anything.

“It is also Ehie's right to say that I have seen a new opening that offers a better opportunity for my political future.

“In fact, if there is anything higher than chief of staff, Ehie deserves it. The governor should appoint him quickly. He is someone who has shown character, and he is steadfast. Not only that he supports the governor, but he also understands the rule of law. He is trying to stand up for the governor, so the governor should appoint him if he did not make the appointment.”

The IYC Secretary urged Wike not to blame the Ijaw people for his political misjudgments, stressing their crucial role in his successful political journey.

He said: “Ijaw people should not be shown in a bad light like Wike is doing. In 1999, Ijaw people supported Peter Odili for governor. It was Asawana who made him governor. Then Asawana felt an itch in someone's ears.

“In 2007, Ijaw people stood behind Rotimi Amaechi. Worst of all, when the Ijaw, who had the magic wand in governance, had the Ijaw man as president; they made the wrong take root and brought Nyesom Wike to us.

“Ijaw people sang Asawana and committed suicide to ensure that another Ikwerre man would succeed an Ikwerre because patient Jonathan Wike supported. Then Asawana wasn't bad; Wike should not blame his political miscalculation on the people of Ijaw.”
