ASUU offers scholarships to 10 ABU needy students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given ten needy students of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria a N2 million scholarship.

In an interview with reporters on Saturday in Zaria, Prof. Haruna-Mohammed Jibril, chairman of the union chapter, made this known.

In February 2018, Jibril announced that the union had established a scholarship program for underprivileged students across its chapters at the National Executive Council meeting at Gombe State University.

Under the programme, the national union gave N200,000 to each of the two grant recipients to assist the underprivileged student in their academic endeavors.

The ABU Chapter awarded two more scholarships to students from 2018 to 2022 after its president stated that the national association was encouraging chapters to imitate the gesture.

“When we returned from our meeting at Kaduna State University this year, we informed Congress and Congress approved the upward revision of the grant to N1.6m,” he said.

He went on to say that the N1.6 million for eight beneficiaries was in addition to the N400,000 the national body originally allocated to two beneficiaries, bringing the total to N2 million.

He went on to say that the reason the ASUU ABU Chapter decided to hand over the scholarship to the recipients early was because students had already started registering for the upcoming session.

He claims that the recipients are intelligent students who have previously faced financial difficulties and have a minimum CGPA of 3.0.

Jibril reported that in addition to giving scholarships to deserving students, ASUU had given palliatives worth N50 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Northern Nigeria.
