BREAKING: Doyin Okupe resigns from the Labor Party

Doyin Okupe, the former Director General (DG) of the Labor Party Presidential Campaign Organization, has formally resigned from the organization, citing differences in ideology.

On Monday, January 8, 2024, he sent a letter announcing his resignation.

Okupe has experience in politics and medical training, having served as spokesperson for Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan in the past.

In addition, he was the spokesperson for the National Republican Convention of the Third Republic in the early 1990s.

In his resignation letter, Okupe stated: “I hereby submit my letter of resignation from the Labor Party, effective today. You will recall that our flag bearer, Mr. Peter Obi, myself and others abruptly left the PDP and had to look for a Special Purpose Vehicle in which we could contest the 2023 presidential election.

“The Labor Party, your good self and other members of your leadership provided us with this true platform without any burden and for which we were extremely grateful.

“We contested the election on the platform of the Labor Party and lost. This makes it extremely difficult for me to remain a member of the Labor Party, which is ideologically rooted to the left of centre.

“I have been a right-wing and liberal democrat all my life. It is therefore this ideological conflict that makes me seek a way out so that I can continue my political activities with liberalism, sincerity and freedom.

“I would like to particularly thank you and other members of the leadership of the party for the cordiality and respect shown to me as Director General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization.

“I wish you and the party every success in your future endeavours. Long live the PvdA. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Your brother, friend and compatriot, Omooba (Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Director General Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation).
