Ex-minister Bello Maitama passes away at 76

The esteemed Islamic scholar, Bello Maitama Sule (Sardaunan Dutse), a former Minister of Trade and a two-term Senator, died at 76 after a brief illness in Kano State on Friday.

Maitama held the office as the Minister of Commerce from 1982 till 1983 and as the Minister of Home Affairs from 1980 till 1982. He represented the late All People’s Party as a Senator for Jigawa South-West in the National Assembly from 1999 until 2007.

Beyond his political work, Maitama was a renowned title holder. He was chairman of the Jigawa state delegation at the National Conference of Constitutional Delegates.

His interment will take place in Kano on Friday following Juma’at prayers, according to a family source.

His demise has been confirmed by the Jigawa State government, via a statement from Mallam Hamisu Muhammad Gumel, the Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, who described it as a calamitous and significant loss for not only his family and Jigawa State, but to the entire country.

“Bello was a legal practitioner, a politician, and a knowledgeable man who stood out in his selfless service to God, the nation, and mankind. His legacy in contributing to national unity and democracy shall continue to be etched in history,” the CPS stated.
