Hon. Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Area of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, was killed by yet to be identified gunmen.
The opposition party has been placed in mourning, as revealed by Lancelot Obiaku, the director general of its New Media Center, and fear and anxiety have descended on the populace.
Two gunmen opened fire on Anyanwu at his rural home in Ezinihitte Mbaise on Thursday evening while he and his wife were present.
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that the gunmen rode to Anyanwu's house on a motorcycle and asked about him.
He said: “The two men rode in on bicycles and asked his wife about her husband's whereabouts and she pointed to the compound. They just went over there and shot him, waited a few seconds before zooming away again.”
“The first shot had scared passers-by so they had no resistance to escape. The problem now is that people have abandoned the community for fear of more attacks,” the source added.
Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police spokesperson, did not answer calls so efforts to get a response from him were unsuccessful.
