Herdsmen Kill 20 in Taraba Attack

According to local sources who spoke to our correspondent over the phone, twenty persons were killed by gunmen believed to be herdsmen in Ussa Local Government Area and Yangtu Development Area of Taraba State on Friday evening.

Our correspondent was informed by Mr. Ure Caleb, a public affairs analyst and youth leader, that more than 20 persons lost their lives in two separate attacks on communities within Ussa Local Government and Yangtu Special Development Area.

At around 6pm on Friday, the gunmen attacked and killed nine persons in Rubur Ribasi, Nyicwu and Ruwah communities of Yangtu Special Development Area, according to Mr Peter Shamwun, the Chairman of Ussa Local Government Council, who was briefed by journalists.

Shamwun said several people were killed when the bandits laid siege to Takum-Ussa Road. He also claimed that one person was killed when the robbers stormed Kpambo Yashe hamlet in Ussa Local Government.

To flush out the criminals, the Chairman implored President Bola Tinubu and Governor Agbu Kefas to act quickly and deploy security personnel to the region.

He said: “From the information I have, the bandits have besieged Takum-Ussa Road and other areas around Yantu to kill more people.

“I don’t know why the bandits decided to concentrate in the area and operate freely without any challenge from security operatives.

“From the place where a man was murdered in Ussa last night to the military barracks in Takum is less than a kilometer.

“The constant attacks on the people have caused so many humanitarian crises and food insecurity. My people are attacked every time they go to the farm. We are at the mercy of bandits. I want both the state and federal governments to intensify their efforts to flush out the bandits.”

Mr Yakubu Tinya, who narrowly escaped death during the attack, told our correspondent that the attackers also killed one person in Tukwog community, along Takum-Manya Road.

“The attackers came in large numbers and simultaneously attacked individual communities around 6 p.m., killing dozens of people. Some people were attacked directly on their farms, some on the way back, and some in their homes.

“I came face to face with death, but God saved me. They attacked me and two of my siblings. One of us was killed. The attackers look like Fulanis, but some look like foreigners, Tinya says.

Our correspondent reports that the attacks on Ussa, Takum and Yangtu communities have been going on for more than two years, and last year in Takum local government, Commanding Officer Ada Barracks Takum was ambushed by the bandits killed. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Usman Abdullahi, stated that the incident was still under investigation.
