INEC is threatening to cancel Saturday’s elections in crisis-ridden polling stations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has threatened that it will not count votes or hold elections at polling stations where violence occurs in the upcoming Bayelsa State governorship election.

While reiterating the commission’s commitment to ensuring credible elections, Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke at a stakeholders meeting in Yenagoa on Tuesday, said that all ad hoc staff to be deployed for the 11 November is well trained.

Represented by the INEC National Commissioner overseeing Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers, May Agbamuche-Mbu, Yakubu explained that INEC would deploy BIVAS to all polling stations for the elections.

“I want to let you know that our BIVAS are customized for INEC, so INEC details and the names of the parties are on the BIVAS, so any BIVAS you see without INEC details cannot be from INEC.

“One more thing: we have all the lists of the serial numbers of the BIVAS we will use; the results sheets are signed at the polling stations.

“Where there is violence, it will be zero; we will not return to that polling station to hold the elections.

“We have recruited and carefully trained all categories of ad hoc personnel to be deployed in the field; all non-sensitive materials have been distributed to all eight local government offices of the state and voter education and sensitization is underway,” he said.
