Kogi Tribunal: Judge orders INEC to grant Ajaka access to election materials

The Kogi State Poll Petitions Tribunal, which met in the state capital Lokoja on Saturday, asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to grant Social Democratic Party governor candidate Murtala Ajaka access to poll materials.

The order was made in response to an application filed by SE Aruwa, SAN, who expressed frustration over the inability to obtain certain documents – particularly 42 items – required to conduct the governorship election.

Aruwa alleged that all efforts to obtain these documents at the INEC headquarters in Lokoja and Abuja had failed, necessitating the order of the tribunal to proceed with the case.

Judge Yusuf Birnin-Kudu, the tribunal’s chairman, said the plea was meritorious and in accordance with both the electoral law and the constitution.

He approved the request that the first respondent, INEC, provide certified copies of the materials used for the governorship election to the legal representatives of Ajaka, led by John Adele, SAN, and Aruwa, SAN, within a period of two days .

Furthermore, Adele’s requests to compel INEC to provide access to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and other electronically used materials within 48 hours were granted by the chairman of the tribunal.

Following the verdict, Adele expressed hope that INEC will adhere to the tribunal’s decision.
