No regrets supporting Diri's re-election – Ex-President Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan stated that he had no regrets in supporting the re-election of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, in the off-season gubernatorial poll held on November 11, 2023.

Jonathan defended his choice by stating that it was the right choice because the governor was still supported by the majority of the state's citizens to hold office.

He said this on Tuesday during the thank you visit of Diri and a powerful delegation to his home in Yenagoa.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by Daniel Alabrah, Diri's chief press secretary, Patience, the former president's wife, was present to greet the governor and his delegation.

After receiving 175,196 votes, Diri of the People's Democratic Party defeated All Progressives Congress contender Timipre Sylva, who received 110,108 votes, to be declared the winner of the election.

Jonathan clarified that he openly supported Diri's candidacy during the elections because of the visionary leadership he had shown in managing state issues.

He asserted that he should be re-elected because of the governor's efforts to move the state forward, especially in maintaining peace and stability.

The former president said, “I did what I did during the governorship election and I have not apologized to anyone because I know the governor and his team did very well especially in the areas of peace and stability of the state. At one point I became very worried.

“I didn't say that others weren't doing well. After all, I was also governor for about a year and a half and I also had my challenges.

“Since Diri came on board, the excesses of cult groups, especially in Yenagoa, have moderated quite a bit. If we want to make progress, we must first and foremost address the issue of security to attract investors. I saw that the governor and his team have a vision and that he should be encouraged to serve another four-year term.”

He reminded the governor that “to whom much was given, much was expected,” and charged the governor to do more to meet the high standards of the vast support base for his welfare administration.

Reacting, Diri expressed gratitude to the outgoing President for his support and recommendation, which enabled the PDP to win the election.

To maintain peace and prosperity, the governor expressed optimism that Jonathan would have greater ability to mediate disputes between citizens of the country and the African continent.

He said: “Your support for a sitting governor was over billions of naira. And so, after we secured that approval, we were very confident of victory. We are here to thank you sincerely because that has brought stability to the state.
