Tanker collapses on Ile-Ife, spilling fuel on road

On Monday, a fuel tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, crashed near Ilesa Motor Park in Ile-Ife on Fajuyi Road.

The petrol tanker, reportedly owned by the BOVAS petrol station, unexpectedly overturned while on its way to Moore Area to unload its contents.

The motorist was found unhurt when a reporter from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) went to the scene of the accident. But the crashed tanker had spilled gasoline everywhere, so security personnel had to cordon off the area.

Ibrahim Salam, an eyewitness, reported that the tanker unexpectedly collapsed while trying to cross a road leading to Moore Area, the location of the gas station.

He said: “We thank God that no lives or property were lost.”

According to Mr Adeyinmi Adeleye, Chief Fire Inspector 2 and Zonal Commander of the Ife Zonal Fire Station, they were stationed to prevent anyone from taking petrol from the tanker to avoid a possible fire situation. Adeleye stated that evaluating the issue was their main priority at this time.

He speculated that the tanker driver may have been speeding due to the dangerous curves and poor road conditions in that area. Adeleye warned drivers of large trucks and tankers to exercise extreme caution when traveling through that region.

Furthermore, the fire chief inspector asked nearby neighbors to be careful and leave the area immediately as there could be a serious risk from the spilled fuel.
