President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced exemptions on transportation charges for interstate road travelers during Christmas and New Year.
Tinubu said the Federal Government will bear 50 percent of the transportation costs for interstate road travelers across the country during Yuletide.
The President added that train rides across the country will be completely free from December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, made this known during a briefing to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said all logistical aspects of the implementation have been worked out between the Minister of Transport and the transport unions and luxury bus owners.
Alake said: “In recognition of the economic situation of the country which he is working very hard to change, President Tinubu wants Nigerians to be able to travel within Nigeria to wherever they want to go to meet their loved ones without the added burden of paying exorbitantly for interstate public owners.
“It is in this manner that the Federal Government, from tomorrow, announces a special discounted rate for road transport and a zero rate for rail across Nigeria.
“What this means is that starting tomorrow, Nigerians who want to travel will be able to hop on public transport on luxury buses at a 50% discount on current costs and all our train services on the routes the trains currently serve will be able to travel back and forth free of charge this year . holiday season.”
Alake said the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transport, will work with transporters, road transport unions and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to realize the rebate.
He added: “The Federal Government led by President Tinubu is working very hard to ensure that Nigerians have a memorable and happy holiday season.
“The President has already directed the police, the Ministry of State Services, the military and other security agencies to work together to ensure that the holiday season is safe without any security breach in any part of the country.
“While we wish all Nigerians a wonderful holiday season, we implore everyone to be law abiding, safety conscious, be our brothers' keepers and extend all goodwill to our families, friends and neighbors.
“We must continue to work within our sphere of influence to make our country the very best we all want it to be.
“While we celebrate and enjoy all the social activities that come with the season, we must also remember to celebrate in moderation.”
